Book Expo: Rounding Up Nonfiction

I've included a few non-fiction titles in my previous two Book Expo posts (on the buzziest books at the show, and new books from 'old' authors), but there were so many incredible-looking non-fiction books on the floor that I wanted to call special attention to a few that stood out to me.

Previously mentioned as a buzz book (so buzzy it was included on the Editors' Buzz Panel) was Another Day in the Death of America: A Chronicle of Ten Short Lives (Nation, October 2016), which "puts a human face--a child's face--on the 'collateral damage' of gun violence" in America. Continuing to probe complicated and complex subjects, there's My (Underground) American Dream: My True Story as an Undocumented Immigrant Who Became a Wall Street Executive (Center Street, September 2016). And there are a wealth of books on race and race relations heading our way: Invisible Man, Got the Whole World Watching: A Young Black Man's Education (Nation, June 2016); Truevine: Two Brothers, A Kidnapping, And a Mother's Quest: A True Story of the Jim Crow South, by Beth Macy (Little, Brown, October 2016); and Writings on the Wall: Searching for a New Equality Beyond Black and White., by Kareem Abdul-Jar Slightly less buzzy, but just as interesting, is Patrick Phillips' Blood at the Root: A Racial Cleansing in America (Norton, September 2016), which the publisher calls "a gripping tale of racial cleansing in Forsyth County, Georgia, and a harrowing testament to the deep roots of racial violence in America."

Norton is actually hitting it out of the park with interesting-looking non-fiction this year: besides Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War, by Mary Roach (June 2016), the house was also pushing The Four Dimensional Human: Ways of Being in the Digital World (August 2016).

The wordlover in me is excited to check out The Word Detective: Searching for the Meaning of it All at the Oxford English Dictionary (Basic, October 2016), written by the former editor of the OED (can you imagine what that job must be like!?). And the productivity lover is ready to dive into Design Your Day: Be More Productive, Set Better Goals, and Live Life on Purpose (Moody, January 2016).
