I'm super bummed I can't be participating in the readathon as actively today as I may have liked... but I'm so, so glad to be able to join in as a mini-challenge host! In keeping with the spirit of giving that Dewey was known for, and that this round of Readathon is embracing, I'm changing things up a little bit. Instead of competing for a prize for yourself, let's spread the love of books and literacy with reading-related charities around the world...
The Pay-it-Forward Readathon Mini Challenge:
The rules are simple: Name a reading- or literacy-related non-profit organization, along with a brief description of what they do/why you like them, in a comment below (or link to the same info in a tweet, IG post, etc.). I'll pick a random commenter, and the organization nominated in the comment/link provided will be given a $25 donation in your name (or whatever name you select).Parameters:
Organizations can be nominated regardless of what geographic areas they serve, as long as:
- The organization's mission is related to reading, literacy, or some combination of the two, and,
- The organization is a registered 501(c)(3) entity (if you aren't sure, you can run a quick search of any organization name at Guidestar.org and get a sense, though most organizations list their status information on their website somewhere).
Not sure where to start? Don't know of any literacy or reading-centered non-profits?
It's easy to find something relevant to your interests, geographic area, etc. A quick Google search for literacy councils, book programs, reading programs, after-school programs, and others will likely turn up something rather quickly. If you're still unsure, check out DonorsChoose.org, where local school teachers list projects for which they are seeking support... there are TONS of reading-related projects seeking funding over there!
Timing
Because I'll be offline much of today, I won't pick a winner until tomorrow--meaning that you have until the end of the 24th hour of the Readathon to nominate an organization!
