I love this quote!! And interestingly enough, another of my favorites is Beecher as well... I had this one written in sharpie on a notecard and slipped into my Barnes and Noble nametag while I worked there.

Nice quote. I got a different meaning at first, but I finally understood it after reading it again. I like the way he states the quotes. I think he's great.
I have to agree with the quote. Instead of throwing away old books, they can be re-used as building blocks for furniture. I've seen books made into bookcases, lamps, vases like the creations of Laura Cahill, and even planters.
I think you guys are getting the wrong picture here. What's intended by the quote (in my opinion) is that books are meant to be read, not stored. Using it to build furniture is foolish, unless you found ways to solidify each page and make it a better building material.
Books aren't made for furniture, but people have the attitude of stacking up books without even appreciating its content. It's not the paper or form that matters in books, it's what's stored inside that makes it what it is - an agent of information. security shutters

Having quotes gives the furniture some meaning. It's in fact much better than having the brand name on it.

ReplyDeleteBooks degrade much faster than wood, so of course they aren't made for furniture. Besides, I'd rather have them in my hands than decorating the house.

ReplyDeleteOur own home is filled with books. I feel like this quote was written just for me! Now it's getting filled with computer desks, too.
