Social Justice Book Club, January 2016: Hope in the Dark Sign-ups & Information

It's that time again! We're excited to be closing in on the start of the January 2016 Social Justice Book Club group read of Hope in the Dark, by Rebecca Solnit.

From the publisher:

With Hope in the Dark, Rebecca Solnit makes a radical case for hope as a commitment to act in a world whose future remains uncertain and unknowable. Drawing on her decades of activism and a wide reading of environmental, cultural, and political history, Solnit argued that radicals have a long, neglected history of transformative victories, that the positive consequences of our acts are not always immediately seen, directly knowable, or even measurable, and that pessimism and despair rest on an unwarranted confidence about what is going to happen next.

Originally published in 2004, now with a new foreword and afterword, Solnit’s influential book shines a light into the darkness of our time in an unforgettable new edition.

(Side note: both the paperback and e-book are 50% on Haymarket's website through the end of the year, if you're looking to get your hands on a copy to keep.)

Schedule

Hope in the Dark is a fairly short book, so the reading schedule shouldn't be too demanding:

January 1-15th: Chapters 1 - 11
January 15th-31st: Chapters 12 - Afterword

Logistics & Sign-ups

This year, the club is moving into Slack, in hopes of fostering more ongoing discussion. Hop on over to Janani's blog if you're not sure what Slack is all about and/or want a quick run-down on how SJBC will function inside Slack.

Because we're hoping that Slack will house most of the ongoing discussion, we've dropped "intro" and "midway" posts for this book... but we'd still love for everyone to share (as much as they are comfortable) posts about the book and reading experience on social media (#SJBookClub) and on your blogs, should you have them!

If you're in, simply sign up below, and we'll send you a Slack invite as soon as we can!

March's Book

Based on feedback from last year's participants, we'll be doing our best to announce club book picks well in advance. And so without further ado, we're excited to share that our March 2016 read will be Enrique's Journey, by Sonia Nazario.

The Rest of It...
